Once on death row, Birmingham man enters plea that could result in his release in less than 10 years

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama - A Birmingham man, who won the right to a new trial after spending three years on death row in the 2004 shooting death of a Center Point woman,  now has less than 10 more years to serve in prison after he entered a plea deal with prosecutors today.

 Alabama is one of the only states in the country that let judges sentence a defendant to death even when a jury recommends against it. They should not have that power.

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Thursday's planned execution of a man convicted of the contract killing of a Muscle Shoals man in 1982 has been called off after a federal appeals court today refused to lift its stay issued last week, the Alabama Attorney General's office confirmed this afternoon.
