Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison
The decision of a North Carolina Court to ban the death penalty for a man under the Racial Justice Act was welcomed by all of us. Another step in the right direction!
The fact that our own Bryan Stevenson of EJI, who is on our advisory board, testified gives us an opportunity to thank him for his selfless service, and the service of the dedicated staff of EJI. Where would we be without them? In order to understand this statement, please recall that we are the only state, which does not provide postconviction representation. Can you imagine how it must feel to be on death row without legal representation with the deadline of an appeal only months away? But help is always on the way via Bryan Stevenson and EJI. If they can't take on our case, they will find us pro-bono representation.
EJI is a non-profit organization. Please believe me when I tell you that Bryan Stevenson, honored around the country and his staff could demand top dollar where ever they went. Any words of ours will always be inadequate to express our gratitude and our affection, and so on behalf of all of us, thank you, Bryan and all of EJI!
See you next week, Esther
