Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 12.12.18

Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 12.12.18

The Christmas edition of Wings of Hope is in the mail. The completely unbiased opinion of the Executive Director is that the men have once more outdone themselves!

As was mentioned last week our Christmas card list so that potential Christmas angels can send cards to the men at Holman is posted on our Facebook page, Esther’s page and on our website http://www.phadp.org/?q=node/748.

This week the men are looking forward to their Christmas package. Of course only those who have supportive friends, relatives or attorneys will be receiving them. We certainly appreciate the pro-bono attorneys who besides donating their legal service purchase a package because they don’t want their clients feeling left out at this time of year.

In these weeks leading up to Christmas we have attempted to keep these Weekly Notes as positive as we can and only briefly touch on the negativity in the world at large and in ours in particular. A very appropriate Op Ed in the New York Times by Margaret Renkl “In the Bible Belt Christmas isn’t Coming to Death Row”deserves our attention: “Here in red-state America, the death penalty is supported by 73 percent of white evangelical Christians and by even a solid majority of Catholics — 53 percent, despite official church teaching to the contrary — according to a Pew Research Center survey released in June.” Could it be because they are Old Testamentarians and not Christians?

As mentioned we have posted Talking Points for the execution date in early February but will not start a concerted effort asking you to contact Governor Ivey on behalf of Domique Ray until after Christmas. Too early!

To close on an up note, Resolutions submitted under Article IX, Section 1 of the Constitution of the NAACP, reviewed by the 109th Convention of the NAACP in July 2018 and ratified by the National Board of Directors in October of this year list Abolition of the Death Penalty as one of these.

 See you next week!
