Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 7.8.20
Our thanks to City of Hope for treating us to a 4th of July dinner with all the trimmings last Friday! We thoroughly enjoyed it.
During our meetings we have been working on keeping our new members who transferred from Donaldson engaged and enthusiastic. Part of that is suggesting topics and format for possible articles for publication and making very sure to give enough encouragement so that they persevere. It certainly is also good for us “old heads” to see how much it can mean for men to finally have an outlet for their ideas and talents, to Be The Other Voice!
After our Board meeting we have a three week rotation of 3 groups open to all. We have the Law Class, the Enlightenment and Oppose. While the first two focus more on specific law issues the Oppose group focuses more on what we can do to spread the word. Our founders agreed with the Warden at that time that the focus of our organization would be death penalty or personal growth related and that we would not discuss the DOC. We have kept our part of this agreement as after all we could not meet if the DOC did not permit it. For those of us who need to vent there are overseas outlets that make that possible.
When we look at the abolition movement we are most encouraged by the actions of Conservatives Concerned About the Death Penalty. We recommend the most recent article in The Economist:”American conservatives are pushing for the repeal of the death penaltyThe federal government’s enthusiasm for executions is at odds with many Republican-led states”. This group is getting things done and for a red state like Alabama the conservative voice is the one that will be heard. It is unfortunate that so far we have been unable to recruit anyone in Alabama to head up a chapter which would then receive support from the national organization with proven strategies. We address this in particular to Christian prison ministry groups many of whose members are conservatives.
Our thoughts today are in Texas and we hope that one day in the not too distant future our states and country will EXECUTE JUSTICE NOT PEOPLE!
In closing and as always, we continue to thank all our generous donors who either gave by going to our website and using the “donate” button or who gave directly. Thank you also to all who took the time to read our notes, commented, liked and shared them on Facebook. You encourage us and make all the difference. Please stay safe!
