Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 1.6.21

Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 1.6.21

As you know, the Alabama Supreme Court set 2.11.21 as the execution date for Willie B. Smith III a developmentally delayed man. The Talking Points are up on our website and on our Facebook page. http://www.phadp.org/?q=alerts. Please contact Governor Ivey! To quote the Governor, “All lives matter!” We would also like to make you aware of the petition hosted by Action Network https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/stop-the-execution-of-willie-smith-i.... It is quick and easy to sign and will be delivered to Governor Ivey at noon of the execution date. You will also find it posted on our Facebook page.

We discussed that it is factually correct to state that last year saw fewer executions but that it is also correct to state that Covid 19 played a role in this as well as the unavailability of the execution drugs. In Alabama we don’t even know where the drugs come from nor do we know their expiration date. It is good to be hopeful but it is not good to become complacent and so we would urge you to let your voices be heard because even one execution is one too many!

We welcomed the anti-death penalty statements by the incoming administration while at the same time also understanding the pro-death penalty legacy left behind in the U.S. Supreme Court by the outgoing one. All of this to say that it remains important for our supporters to continue to raise their voices in 2021!

And last but certainly not least we were touched and honored to have one of our Weekly Reports reprinted in the The Revealer Newsletter, Vol 10, Issue I of Tuskeegee whose editor is Leon E “Chief” Frazier. “Chief” as his friends call him was the first law enforcement officer to sign on to our Moratorium Petition in a public ceremony on the steps of the Capitol. Chief is a retired Chief of Police. We borrow his signature sign off “Love, Trust and Respect!”

In closing and as always, we continue to thank all our generous donors who either gave by going to our website and using the “donate” button or who gave directly. Thank you also to all who took the time to read our notes, commented, liked and shared them on Facebook. You encourage us and make all the difference. Stay safe!
