Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison

By this time next week, the election will be over and we are hopeful for a good outcome in CA of Proposition 34 to end the death penalty in that state. Until then, we will be sending positive energy to all working on this vote, so important for all states with the death penalty.

Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison

The Board received an update on the annual conference of the AL State Conference of the NAACP held last weekend in Huntsville. Briefly stated, we are so grateful for how they support us as an organization, and also as individuals! The 3 days were jam packed full 3 with workshops and meetings, but also allowed time for networking and important one on one exchanges. Our thanks to all for all the hard work that went into the planning of this event!

We all joined in to sing Happy Birthday to our Information Director, Brent Martin. I don't want to brag, but we have some good voices on the Board!

And then we shared the recent positive news of the 2 commutations and the response by so many to that. It is our impression that our supporters are hungry for good news. We understand that and feel the same!

Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison

We read the E.U. press release for European and World Day against the Death Penalty, posted below. As one of the Board commented, those are strong words. I will be sending in a copy to post on the bulletin board in the library. Although confined, the Board is very aware of the stand taken by Europe on the death penalty; its refusal to ship execution drugs and on a more personal level, the good friends we have over there. This support means a lot to us and we thank them!

Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison

Today one of our topics of conversation was the importance of grassroots networking for our organization. While most human rights organizations would agree about the importance of this, for us, who are in the unique situation of having our Chairman and our Board of Directors on death row, grassroots networking is essential to our survival as a viable organization. We have always understood this and appreciate all the different organizations which have worked and work with us.

Just to let our faithful supporters know that today's meeting was canceled as agents from INS, Immigration and Naturalization Service, were at Holman going from cell to cell to determine people's place of origin. In the event that a case was overturned and one was not born in the U.S., one would be deported. The same of course holds true for individuals in population, but as far as we remember, this was a first for Alabama death row.

Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison

We are pleased with the stance taken by the shooting spree survivor in Huntsville that life without the possibility of parole for Amy Bishop is best for the survivors. This way they don't have to be put through the trial, and later on the appeals and can work on leaving the horror of that day behind them.

Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison

Four times a year phadp publishes a newsletter, On Wings of Hope, which is written, typed and formatted at Holman. It is the time of year when all members have written an article and now comes the time for editing, typing and selecting.

As a way of teaching board members new skills, two men have been selected to learn how to type, so that not all the typing falls on the Chairman and Vice-Chairman. Up to now this is what has been the case.
