Friends, We are sad to announce that the State of Alabama took the life of Jason Oric Williams tonight at Holman Prison.

Our thoughts and prayers are especially with Jason’s mother, who it was our great privilege to meet, his family and friends.

We thank all of you who wrote, emailed, faxed and called Governor Bentley on behalf of Jason right until the very end. We thank everyone who organized and attended vigils around the state and who joined with us in France, Germany and the U.K. We thank the Alabama State Conference of the NAACP, the Alabama New South Coalition, Alabama Arise, Alabama Peace Groups, the Quakers as well as ACAT-France for their support. As always, we thank our sister organizations JAM in Birmingham and the Quest for Social Justice in Mobile for all you do.

We know that justice is not done when a human being is murdered, whether it be by an individual or by the State. We also know that when we do not raise our voice in protest we become complicit. You have been the other voice on behalf of Jason and we are very grateful to all of you. Together, one day, we shall overcome!
