The governor’s office set a time frame for the execution of James Barber that will begin at midnight on July 20 and expire at 6 a.m. on July 21. The 30-hour window is designed to give the state prison system more time after two most recent executions were called off because of trouble with intravenous lines.
You can find the Execution Talking Points at: https://www.phadp.org/execution-alert-james-barber/. We thank the individuals, including Cantor Mike Zoosman from L’chaim, Jews Against the Death Penalty for their daily weekday calls to the Governor’s office protesting the upcoming execution. Might you join them? PHONE 1-334-242-7100 and please sign the Death Penalty Action petition: https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/stop-the-execution-of-james-barber-in-alabama/
It is a well known fact that race plays an important role in determining who gets the death penalty and so the historic decision by the U.S. Supreme Court in Allen v. Milligan is also a victory for our issue. To quote Evan Milligan “I’ve been thinking about how democracy and freedom are not perfect, but they can, at minimum, help us question and confront the rigid caste systems and other things that determine life options.”
Sam Heath of EJUSA of the Evangelical network wrote that: “you can access all of our In the Movement conversations on Spotify as a podcast. We want to make these more available to you, so we will continue to record and post them on our YouTube page, and now also have them downloadable as podcast episodes.
Head to this link or search for “In the Movement” on Spotify. Download, listen, and also share this link with others!”
The latest edition of our quarterly newsletter Wings of Hope is now at the printer.
