Friends,

We are very sad to announce that the State of Alabama took the life of Eddie Powell tonight at Holman Prison. Our thoughts and prayers are especially with Eddie’s family, his attorneys and many friends.

We thank all of you who wrote, emailed, faxed and called Governor Bentley on behalf of Eddie right until the very end. We know that Eddie and his family were touched by the world-wide support and it was important to him that we thank you on his behalf.

We also thank everyone who organized and attended vigils around the state and who joined with us in France, Germany, the U.K and Canada. We thank the Alabama State Conference of the NAACP, the Alabama New South Coalition, Alabama Arise, Amnesty International, Alabama Peace Groups, the Alabama Psychological Association, the Quakers as well as ACAT-France and ACAT-Italia for their support.

As always, we thank our sister organizations JAM in Birmingham and the Quest for Social Justice in Mobile for all they do.We know that justice is not done when a human being is murdered, whether it be by an individual or by the State. We also know that when we do not raise our voice in protest we become complicit. You have been the other voice on behalf of Eddie and we are very grateful to all of you. Together, one day, we shall overcome!
