Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 1.11.23

Today, having received a copy of Elizabeth Bruenig’s in depth article “Alabama Makes Plan to Gas Its Prisoners” published in the Atlantic, there was much to discuss. It presents valuable insights into what difficulties Alabama is encountering in its quest for a new method of “institutional homicide” and we quote, “ It would take a certain audacity to be the first state to test an unknown means of execution immediately following three consecutive botched executions. But Alabama’s administrators are nothing if not audacious.” We also believe that the article will resonate with people not as close to the death penalty as we are because of her personal relationship with the victims of the recent 2 botched execution attempts. We are very grateful for the ongoing spotlight on Alabama’s ruthless pursuit of so called justice!

At the request of Alabama Arise Policy Analyst, Mike Nicholson and Policy Director, Akiesha Anderson there was a zoom meeting to discuss Death Penalty Reform Strategy for 2023. It was an informative and encouraging meeting. We appreciate working with this great organization.

We are following developments in TN regarding its failure to follow its own lethal injection protocol and hope that the Alabama Governor and Attorney General take note.

In closing and as always, we continue to thank all our generous donors who either gave by going to our website and using the “donate” button or who gave directly. Thank you also to all who took the time to read our notes, commented, liked and shared them on Facebook. You encourage us and make all the difference. Stay safe!
