Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 1.12.22

We plan to keep 1.27.22, the execution date for Matthew Reeves as the heading of our Weekly Report even though a Federal Court issued an injunction against executing him by any method but Nitrogen Hypoxia. Mr. Reeves has an IQ in the 60s and is intellectually disabled. Mr. Reeves was 18 years old at the time of the crime. You can find the Talking Points on our website http://www.phadp.org/?q=alerts and the petition at: https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/stop-the-execution-of-matthew-reeves…

We have joined the National Call To Action To Abolish the Federal Death Penalty. On Monday, January 17, Martin Luther King Day, at 9:00 a.m. a symbolic delivery of a petition will take place outside the US Supreme Court and then process across the street to the U.S. Capitol. The event is sponsored by the ad-hoc Abolitionist Action Action Committee and we are proud to be listed as a co sponsor. President Biden expressed his opposition to the death penalty while running for office and so we hope that the time has now come to express this opposition with action.

We discussed Alabama Arise’s Fact Sheet “Alabama’s death penalty practices remain unjust and unusually cruel” by Dev Wakeley and discussed once more the importance of working together with other likeminded organizations.

Closer to home and not too surprisingly we have an outbreak of Covid on death row. So far there have been no deaths and we trust that those of us who were smart enough to be vaccinated will come through this okay and of course we hope that the others will as well. Obviously as some of our Board members have also been affected we are limited in the work we can accomplish right now but are doing our best to take care of what we must. Whether this outbreak will affect the upcoming execution remains to be seen.

In closing and as always, we continue to thank all our generous donors who either gave by going to our website and using the “donate” button or who gave directly. Thank you also to all who took the time to read our notes, commented, liked and shared them on Facebook. You encourage us and make all the difference. Stay safe and wear a mask!

Esther
