Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 1.14.26

Congratulations to the Rev. Dr. Jeff Hood who received notification that he had been selected this year to be inducted into The 41st Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Collegium of Scholars at Morehouse College on April 9…basically a hall of fame or select society for social justice scholars.

At our Board Meeting we chose our word for the year and it is RESILIENCE! This is who we are and what we will keep in mind and continue to practice! “Resilience is the process and outcome of successfully adapting to difficult or challenging life experiences, especially through mental, emotional, and behavioral flexibility and adjustment to change.”

One of our friends at Alabama Arise is quoted in “Criminal Justice Reform Advocates Expect to play Defense in Alabama Legislative Session” Alabama Reflector “I think a lot of the election-year grandstanding is going to be an issue, it usually is. Every four years, people will come up with these bad ideas and try to advance them. It is hard to get positive movement on bills that make common sense for reforms.” And what does that say about the audience, we ask?

Stephen Cooper in an article entitled Investment in Alabama Antithetical to French Values writes: “ The French should be discussing and implementing ways to regulate, reduce, and again, as drastic as it sounds — and is — even completely end the massive investment by wealthy and powerful French companies in Alabama until Alabama stops torturing humans to death. This should be a major topic of discussion when France convenes the 9th World Congress Against the Death Penalty next summer in Paris.” We hope!

Execution for child rape is among the top priority bills for the 2026 session and up for consideration in the House Judiciary Committee today. If the committee approves it could be voted in the House tomorrow. The bill has 51 co-sponsors and got a boost from Governor Ivey in her last state of the state address yesterday.

Last week we had a wonderful surprise. For those of us who have tablets, and not all do, we received the Christmas cards you sent us. We thank you for thinking of us and want you to know that although late due to the new mailing system they still did what you intended for them to do, ie bring us joy!

We thank all who are working so hard and diligently to stop all killing in Alabama! And as always in closing, we thank all our generous donors who either gave by going to our website and using the “donate” button or who gave directly. Thank you also to all who took the time to read our notes, commented, liked and shared them on Facebook. Stay safe and be kind to each other.
