Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 1.4.23

Today was our first Board Meeting in 2023! We had decided that our hard working Board should relax a little at the end of the year and that new projects should not be launched before the beginning of 2023. We already had a couple in mind and so today we discussed the particulars.

One of Dr. Joel Zivot’s articles made clear that executions would not be possible without medical support. We were encouraged by the action of one of our Advisory Board members who took copies of our weekly notes where we referred to that and handed them out to medical staff at her own appointment. If there is no such thing as an innocent bystander then Alabama doctors, the Medical Board must be held accountable. It is our plan to reach out to various medical staff who took the Hippocratic Oath to do no harm and ask for their help. We also hope that our supporters will follow the lead of our Board Member and contact their own physician.

We discussed the article in AL COM “Alabama faces uncertainty in 2023 after year of death penalty trouble” and we quote from it:” Between the individual executions, the way the ADOC and Gov. Kay Ivey reacted, and national trends, capital punishment in Alabama is likely to be a contentious topic in 2023.” AND SO IT SHOULD BE!

We also appreciated the article in the Guardian by Ed Pilkington “What is it like to survive an execution by lethal injection?” As we live with those who did we have a little insight but only those who did survive an execution can really know the horror that remains. We recalled that Ed Pilkington witnessed the execution of Darrell Grayson and was in touch with Esther after it.

In closing and as always, we continue to thank all our generous donors who either gave by going to our website and using the “donate” button or who gave directly. Thank you also to all who took the time to read our notes, commented, liked and shared them on Facebook. You encourage us and make all the difference. Stay safe!

Esther
