Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 10.29.25
There is no better way to begin this Weekly Report than with our late Chairman’s final words: “I didn’t kill anybody. I didn’t participate in killing anybody,” he said. “There is no justice in this state. It’s all political. It’s revenge motivated. It’s not about closure, because closure comes from within, not with an execution. There will be no justice in this state until we change this system. I want all my people to keep fighting. Let’s get it.” Yes, we are very sad but as Anthony Boyd asked us, we will keep fighting!
In the New York Times “Lengthy Execution by Nitrogen Gas in Alabama Renews Concerns Over Method.” Let us hope so! Thank you “Justice Sonia Sotomayor who described nitrogen hypoxia as a “cruel form of execution” that should not be allowed to continue.” And EJI published “Prolonged Execution in Alabama Raises Alarm”
In an article by Niamh Shackleton “In the hours leading up to Boyd’s execution, the Supreme Court’s three liberal justices condemned the use of nitrogen gas and described it as ‘intense psychological torment’. Addressing the majority decision on Boyd’s request to postpone his death and to die by firing squad, Justice Sonia Sotomayor said: “Boyd asks for the barest form of mercy: to die by firing squad, which would kill him in seconds, rather than by a torturous suffocation lasting up to four minutes.”The Constitution would grant him that grace. My colleagues do not.” Apparently the Constitution only applies to some of us!
And then there is the most recent article by the Rev. Dr. Jeff Hood https://www.patheos.com/blogs/jeffhood/eyewitness-to-horror-on-the-execution-of-anthony-boyd
From our friends at Death Penalty Action: Anthony Boyd’s death by nitrogen suffocation was a tragic display of cruelty disguised as “innovation.” No execution method is humane — and no company should enable them. Call Walter Surface Tech: 860-298-1100Tell them to disavow their mask’s use in executions. https://actionnetwork.org/petit…/say-no-to-the-gas-chamber
Many of you have reached out to us letting us know that you are with us and we thank you!
And yes, we will keep fighting and that also means organizing at Holman and voting for a new Board while at the same time being there for each other!
We thank all who are working so hard and diligently to stop all killing in Alabama! And as always in closing, we thank all our generous donors who either gave by going to our website and using the “donate” button or who gave directly. Thank you also to all who took the time to read our notes, commented, liked and shared them on Facebook. Stay safe and be kind to each other!
Esther
