Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 10.4.23

Alabama continues to be in the national and international news because it asked for an execution date for Kenneth Smith whose first execution was botched. We share all the articles on Facebook and of course copy and send them to our Board at Holman. The Washington Post “Alabama seeks to execute inmate with “untested” nitrogen hypoxia” appeared last Wednesday.

The U.S. Supreme Court declined to review the innocence case of Toforest Johnson. We quote his attorney: “The public cannot possibly have confidence in the system if the state of Alabama is permitted to execute Johnson when it paid its key witness $5,000 in secret and both the District Attorney and the trial prosecutor support a new trial,” Johnson’s lawyers wrote.”

We were contacted by Carlo Santor of Sant’Egidio in Rome, asking how they might help us. He had been referred to us by Rick Halperin. We had a very productive zoom call and appreciate Sant’Egidio’s interest in getting word out about Alabama and in staying connected. We will be talking again. Meanwhile, an appeal for Kenneth Smith, as well as a petition, are up on their website. Much appreciation!

The State has also asked for an execution date for Casey McWhorter. We are reaching out to Casey and will keep you posted.

For years we have appreciated Alabama Arise and during the call with Alabama People of Faith Death Penalty Coalition we met one more reason, Formeeca Tripp who is the Southeast Alabama Organizer for Alabama Arise. Formeeca is a student at Auburn University where last week she spoke to an Intro to Social Work class about the death penalty. She reported that the students were very interested and that she will be speaking again. We so appreciate being in touch with Formeeca and are grateful to have her in our corner.

We thank all who are working so hard and diligently to stop all killing in Alabama! And as always in closing, we thank all our generous donors who either gave by going to our website and using the “donate” button or who gave directly. Thank you also to all who took the time to read our notes, commented, liked and shared them on Facebook. And if you would like to order our book “Ghosts Over the Boiler” you can do so at Amazon.com. Stay well and be kind to each other.                                                                  Esther
