Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 11.22.23

The State of Alabama has set 1.25.24 as the execution date for Kenneth Smith. The Talking Points are at https://www.phadp.org/execution-alert-kenneth-eugene-smith/ on our website.  Please: Take action to spare Kenneth’s life at bit.ly/KennethSmithAL or at athttps://actionnetwork.org/petitions/stop-the-execution-of-kenneth-smith and write to the Governor as well!

Robert Grass, an attorney for Smith, stated that his defense team is disappointed in the decision and will continue to fight in court.“We remain hopeful that those who review this case will see that a second attempt to execute Mr. Smith — this time with an experimental, never-before-used method and with a protocol that has never been fully disclosed to him or his counsel — is unwarranted and unjust,”. Attorneys for Kenneth Eugene Smith filed an amended lawsuit on Monday challenging the constitutionality of the proposed new execution method.

We highly recommend the U.K. Daily Mail article, an in depth interview by the Daily Mail’s Washington Correspondent with Kenneth Smith about how Alabama tortured him for 90 minutes and now wants to try and kill him!

We recommend the article Breaking down Alabama's death penalty laws as state executes inmate by lethal injection . Yes, Alabama is certainly first in everything bad from jury override to poor initial legal representation and now the state wants to be first with the gas chamber!

We are doing our best to come to terms that Casey is no longer physically present and will treasure forever the “most likely last physical message ”he was able to send us, and we quote: “I just want, need for people to see for themselves the Incompetence law is ok for the state.” And we agree with the Rev. Jeff Hood: “Rage is a beautiful thing. Jesus tore up the temple. I hope we tear up the death penalty.”

Our thanks to Alli of Death Penalty Action for the beautiful graphic with Casey’s last words!

Casey will be part of our Thanksgiving celebration!

From our our Special Events Coordinator Dawson Hicks:For anyone on Instagram we now have a page @phadp.al Please follow us there and this feed as we continue our work to abolish the death penalty in Alabama and across the country!”
