Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 11.6.24

Governor Ivey set 11.21.24 as the execution date by nitrogen gas for Carey Dale Grayson. Talking Points : https://www.phadp.org/execution-alert-carey-dale-grayson-11-21-24/ and most importantly please sign the petition: https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/stop-the-execution-of-carey-grayson-in-alabama

The petitions will be presented to Governor Ivey on Monday, 11.18.24 after a rally at the Alabama State Capitol in Montgomery organized by the Alabama State Death Penalty Abolition Coordinator of Amnesty International USA and Death Penalty Action. Please join us!

The Supreme Court on Monday ordered a federal appeals court to take another look at the case of death row inmate Joseph Smith whom lower courts found has an intellectual disability. “ Smith’s appeal was pending at the supreme Court for more than a year- a highly unusual delay that suggested sharp divisions among the nine justice.”

We participated in a follow up  zoom call organized by Shady Kimzey, artist, educator and facilitator regarding how phadp might be involved in the Creative Placemaking and Leadership Conference by South Arts in 2025. We were also honored to “meet” Kerrigan Casey who with Dr. Katie Owens-Murphy brought about the Art of Resistance. I copy from Kerrigan Casey’s page:” What steps will you take to join the resistance? Let us know at : [email protected] Follow us on IG at : artof_resistance Please also email for interest on housing this exhibition.” It is especially appropriate at this time 2 weeks before Carey Grayson’s scheduled execution. Carey is an exceptionally talented artist!

Advisory Board Member Retisha Warr LMSW is going to Troy University to speak to Sigma Alpha Sigma at Troy University for their Fall Semester Talk. She is going to be presenting on social worker’s roles in prison policies with a focus on the detrimental consequences of the death penalty in Alabama. Her research specifically touches on mass incarceration’s effects on children and families. She is looking forward to connecting to future social workers who will make positive changes in social welfare in the Deep South!

As we are now in November this year’s Christmas card list is up on our website. https://www.phadp.org/christmas-card-list-2024/

Thank you once more to our partner JAM for sponsoring a Day of Reflection, alerting followers about Carey Grayson’s date and vigil on day of execution, as well as referring friends to our website.

The Christmas edition of On Wings of Hope is on its way to the printer,

We thank all who are working so hard and diligently to stop all killing in Alabama! And as always in closing, we thank all our generous donors who either gave by going to our website and using the “donate” button or who gave directly. Thank you also to all who took the time to read our notes, commented, liked and shared them on Facebook. Stay safe and be kind to each other!
