Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 12.7.22

We discussed the article “The court and the death penalty” in the Martha’s Vineyard Times. “In any event, it is crystal clear that the Supreme Court, with its current makeup, will not intervene to stop it. It remains the responsibility of the people of each state to decide whether they want to follow the lead taken by Massachusetts and 22 other states that have repealed their capital punishment laws.” We appreciated that the article does not try to whitewash the terrible history of capital punishment in states that have now abolished it but that it puts the responsibility of abolishing it on the individual state, in our case what they call “Sweet Home Alabama” with its great sounding motto of “We dare defend our rights!”

We also discussed the article by Dr. Joel Zivot “Alabama is pausing the execution method after two botched attempts, but physicians need to refuse to ever participate in making them possible.” We believe that this article is very important in showing what really happens behind the scenes with executions, the rational by those in power and that “. Alabama is not standing down—it is reloading” which is why we include a link to it: https://deathpenaltynews.blogspot.com/2022/12/usa-lethal-injections-are-crueler-than.html?spref=fb&fbclid=IwAR3ynhSS6pa4Z3u0RKcWqRX5iQ11h6LiTOO6c2a0BDvKaH_KhARarhQ_7yg

Unfortunately it came as absolutely no surprise that Attorney General Steve Marshall told media on Monday that “there is no moratorium, nor will there be, on capital punishment in Alabama.” We highly recommend the Opinion Piece by Josh Moon “ Gov. vs. AG: In fight over execution process, aiming higher is the answer”.
