Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 2.14.24

The Attorney General has asked for an execution date for Jamie Mills by lethal injection. We will keep you posted once a date has been set. No doubt the State would like to move on from the torture death of Kenneth Smith but articles deeply critical of this method of premeditated murder continue to appear across the country. Also, the district court in Alabama last week set a hearing for March on the request for another death row inmate to intervene in Kenneth Smith's now-moot case for the purpose of examining the case documents and the mask Alabama is using in its nitrogen gas execution protocol. As one of Death Penalty Action’s Alabama petition says:” Pull Back The Curtains On Executions!”

And also please: Say NO to the #GasChamber in #Kansas, #Louisiana, Nebraska, #Ohio & elsewhere! Alabama conducted a horrific #NitrogenHypoxia execution on Jan 25, 2024. Sign here to say #NoGasChamber! #NoNitrogenHypoxia  bit.ly/NoGasChamberDPA #StopExecutions. You can find all of these petitions at Death Penalty Action website or Facebook page!

Of special interest for us in the new legislation session is H.B. 27 which has been pre filed by Representative Chris England and which would make an earlier passed bill outlawing jury override retroactive. If it had passed last year it would have saved Kenny’s life and there are others at Holman whose lives it will save.

Congratulations to Mario Woodward our new Information Director! We thank Mario for having already worked diligently in this capacity prior to his election. The position held previously by Randy Lewis became vacant when Randy’s sentence was commuted to life without. Congratulations also to the Sub-Board Marcus Williams, Craig Newton and Demetrius Frazier.

We have started work on the next edition of our quarterly newsletter, Wings of Hope. Articles are due this week!

We thank all who are working so hard and diligently to stop all killing in Alabama! And as always in closing, we thank all our generous donors who either gave by going to our website and using the “donate” button or who gave directly. Thank you also to all who took the time to read our notes, commented, liked and shared them on Facebook. Stay safe and be kind to each other! Happy Valentine’s Day!                                                                     Esther
