Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 2.17.21
We had so much to discuss as we went over the events of the past week! It was a great moment when Willie returned to his cell late Thursday evening. We heard him come back on the tier and heard him shout I love y’all! We are very grateful for the stay although somewhat concerned about what is next.
We focused on the outpouring of support from so many individuals, the letters written, the calls made, the 23,000 individuals who signed the Death Penalty Action petition to Governor Ivey on behalf of Willie B. Smith. We discussed the vigils held around the state and the virtual vigil organized by Death Penalty Action at which we were present because Esther read what we had written for this event. We learned that it was well received and are grateful to all who participated including our Advisory Board Member Judy Collins and friend of long ago Chris Brown whose father was on the Board of our organization while on death row. So many people to thank, so many people to appreciate especially of course our Federal Defenders of the Middle District! It was brought home to us once more that we are not alone but that there are so many in the free world, individuals as well as organizations who stand with us.
We also discussed the toll that an execution takes on all involved even when it is stayed and how one might best deal with that. For some of us work helps but we are all different.
We did hold elections for the 2 vacant positions for the Sub-Board and welcome Daryl Turner and Mario Woodard to the team. Welcome on board! We look forward to working together!
In closing and as always, we continue to thank all our generous donors who either gave by going to our website and using the “donate” button or who gave directly. Thank you also to all who took the time to read our notes, commented, liked and shared them on Facebook. You encourage us and make all the difference. Stay safe!
