Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 2.26.25
“Juror: Robin “Rocky” Myers is innocent. Ivey should spare his life.”” Mr. Myers has no more options in court. His only hope is that Gov. Ivey grants him clemency.”
From our friends at Death Penalty Action: “It is shameful that Alabama has plans to continue experimenting with nitrogen gas suffocation executions, a form of the gas chamber. The most recent such killing was in November.
Toforest Johnson, Rocky Myers and others have innocence claims being ignored by the courts. We must shine the spotlight brighter than ever on Alabama, and pull back the curtains so that everyone in Alabama can see the awful futility of the death penalty, and end it!” TAKE ACTION: sign: bit.ly/RockyMyersDPA and call Governor Ivey at: 1-334-242-7100 FAX: 1-334-242-3282 Email: http://governor.alabama.gov/contact/
We hope that many of you in Alabama signed on to the multifaith sign-on letter for Rocky organized by our friends at Equal Justice USA.
Grace Presbyterian and Canterbury Episcopal, both in Tuscaloosa, are working with Greater Birmingham Ministries to co-sponsor an event to support Toforest Johnson’s case.
Alabama House joined Florida and Tennessee to Advance unconstitutional expansion of the death penalty for the rape of children even though advocates say that it would harm children. Besides that “Chances are, the State of Alabama will get sued for passing a bill that’s unconstitutional, we’ll spend tons of taxpayer dollars defending it in court” stated Rep. Phillip Ensler. Of course the State of Alabama is not concerned about spending tax-payer dollars because if it were it would abolish the death penalty as that sentence costs so much more than a life without the possibility of parole sentence. We signed and shared Witness to Innocence “Don’t Expand the Death Penalty in Alabama.”
Our thanks to T.J. Riggs, the Amnesty International Alabama State Death Penalty Coordinator for the introduction to the International Amnesty Chapter in Monmouth, Wales which this year has adopted Alabama for their activism, and it largely centers around anti-death penalty work. Welcome!
We thank all who are working so hard and diligently to stop all killing in Alabama! And as always in closing, we thank all our generous donors who either gave by going to our website and using the “donate” button or who gave directly. Thank you also to all who took the time to read our notes, commented, liked and shared them on Facebook. Stay safe and be kind to each other!
