Today we are continuing to celebrate the great news which came during the Press Conference with the Execution Intervention Project and other friends. THE GOVERNOR COMMUTED CHARLES LEE BURTON’S DEATH SENTENCE TO LIFE WITHOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF PAROLE! Yes, we are celebrating and it was my great privilege to be able to give this news to our family on death row at Holman and to hear our chairman give a shout out to the runner who then shouted it out on the tier!
As you will not find hard to imagine there has been an outpouring of joy from all over the world and we are so grateful to ALL of you, too many to mention, but especially to Sonny’s dedicated legal team, the PR team, his spiritual advisor , Masjid Baitul Haqq, for all the organizing so many of you did to make this happen. Yes, keep hope alive, not always easy from where we are but this miracle certainly reinforces that we must do that.
And also, our respectful thanks to Governor Kay Ivey. And “Burton thanked the governor for her decision.“She has proven to the people of Alabama, and the world, that she is a responsible Governor. And I thank her. Just saying thank you doesn’t seem like much. But it’s what I can give her. And I do thank her,” Burton said in the statement.”
The Attorney General has asked for a date for Jeffrey Lee. We will keep you updated. Meanwhile it is important to note that he has many powerful issues, including 7-5 jury override of the life without sentence for which the jury had voted and at the time of the crime an untreated TBI.
