Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 3.19.25

Alabama has set 4.24.25 as the execution date for James Osgood. As per Mr. Osgood’s request there will be no appeals to contact Governor Ivey and no protests against his execution.

Brief calling for new trial for Toforest Johnson filed by former Alabama Attorney General, US Senator

and we quote:” former Alabama Attorney General Bill Baxley who is one of ten who filed the amicus brief: “I couldn’t believe what I was reading,” described Baxley. “I couldn’t believe the case, couldn’t believe the guy got indicted or went to the jury or the jury convicted, I just couldn’t believe it had happened.” But it did going back 26 years. “ Death Row inmate deserves new trial, ex-US Senator, former Alabama AG urge in ‘unusual’ request” by Ivana Hrynkiw :” the AG’s Office argued Johnson shouldn’t be allowed to litigate the same claims again. The court records “speak for themselves,” the office said.” We appreciate the reply by the Innocence Project that” the attorney general’s office “misses the fundamental point” that prosecutors must pursue justice, even after a conviction.

“A system that wholly ignores a prosecutor’s determination that his own conviction lacks integrity cannot claim to serve justice.”

Doug Jones who is a former U.S. Senator from Alabama and served as the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama from 1997 to 2001 and Bill Baxley who served as Alabama’s Attorney General from 1971 to 1979 and as the Lieutenant Governor of Alabama from 1983 to 1987 both still active trial lawyers, and who both recently joined the amicus brief on behalf of former Alabama prosecutors in support of a new trial for Toforest Johnson wrote a guest opinion piece. “Toforest Johnson case illustrates why prosecutors must be able to revisit the past.”

Ex-Alabama death row inmate Rocky Myers speaks out after Gov. Kay Ivey grants clemency  Rocky left Holman’s death row on Monday morning to loud cheers and banging of the doors from the men!!

We have long understood that in order to abolish the death penalty we must go where the other is, especially in a conservative state like ours and so we welcomed the article by Demetrius Minor of Conservatives Concerned “Conservative Leaders Confront Death Penalty Errors Head On” published in Townhall. We have reached out to Demetrius Minor in the past but so far have not been able to find a conservative Alabamian to take on a role in this here in Alabama.

Recently readers have had difficulties opening articles that I post. And so I asked our Development Officer to look into it and after a whole lot of digging he found that Facebook started this a year ago and just got around to us.. From now on I will also post the link on which you can click to open the articles. Thank you for your patience!

We thank all who are working so hard and diligently to stop all killing in Alabama! And as always in closing, we thank all our generous donors who either gave by going to our website and using the “donate” button or who gave directly. Thank you also to all who took the time to read our notes, commented, liked and shared them on Facebook. Stay safe and be kind to each other!
