We discussed the Senate Confirmation Hearings of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson and some of the broader implications, not only obviously for us but for what they say about our country. The fact that race and gender are making history says a lot about the myth of equality of which this country likes to pride itself. Then there is the abrasive tone of some of the questioners who supposedly represent voters. Whatever happened to respect? It goes without saying that we are hoping that Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson will be confirmed even though we are under no illusion that it will change the outcome for those of us who will come before the U.S. Supreme Court as the majority, just as in our state, is in love with the death penalty. Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall testified against U.S. Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson on Thursday, the last day of confirmation hearings by the Senate Judiciary Committee.
For those who have been with us for a while Shelley Douglass, one of our Advisory Board members and her organization JAM need no introduction. Like many organizations COVID took its toll and so we were delighted to receive the following email from Shelley: “I'm writing because some of you were part of the old Justice and Mercy Group, some of you vigil with us, and all of you oppose the death penalty.
I'm wondering if it's time to revive JAM, or a group like JAM, to do education about the death penalty in Alabama, and perhaps if it seems wise/helpful some legislative work and/or demonstrations. I don't have a specific idea, just testing the waters to see if anyone is interested. And of course if we get a small group going we can invite other folk to join in as well!”
Our Spiritual Advisor the Rev. Tom Duley is a member and he and Shelley are making plans for positive actions. We will keep you informed and encourage you to join them.
We cannot count the number of times we have heard from well meaning individuals living in the Birmingham area asking us how they can get involved. Well here you are and we will be more than happy to put you in touch with Shelley if you are not already in touch with her.
In closing and as always, we continue to thank all our generous donors who either gave by going to our website and using the “donate” button or who gave directly. Thank you also to all who took the time to read our notes, commented, liked and shared them on Facebook. You encourage us and make all the difference. Stay safe!
