Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 3.27.24

Alabama Supreme Court Justices granted the Alabama attorney general's request to authorize an execution date for Jamie Mills. Gov. Kay Ivey will set the exact date. Ivey spokeswoman Gina Maiola said the office would provide updates as they become available.

Our thanks, appreciation and shout out to Amnesty International, AL and the ACLU of Alabama for organizing a very successful rally last Thursday at the State House in support of H.B. 27 which would retroactively apply a 2017 law that ended jury override and in support of Rocky Myers who would also be affected. The speakers were warmly received beginning with Rep. Chris England who introduced the bill. We heard from the organizers, the son of Rocky Meyers and then Deanna Smith, the wife of our late brother Kenny Smith which moved many of us to tears. The event ended with our walking over to the Capitol where TJ Riggs of Amnesty International presented the petition for Rocky Myers to the Governor’s office which more than 600,000 people had signed. Many dear and long time friends and supporters were at the event including Death Penalty Action from out of town. The Press covering was amazing! We thank all of you!

Our thanks also to Beth Shelburne for her weekly Moth to Flame which keeps us all updated on justices and injustices in Alabama!

And then there are the collaborations of the Rev. Jeff Hood and one of our own, Bart Johnson which we appreciate!

We hope that all of you who receive this and are on Facebook have liked our page! Numbers matter! https://www.facebook.com/projecthopetoabolishthedeathpenalty

We thank all who are working so hard and diligently to stop all killing in Alabama!
