Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 5.13.26

Governor Ivey set 6.11.26 as the execution date for Jeffery Lee and she has the power to grant clemency. It is important to note that he has many powerful issues, including 7-5 jury override of the life without sentence for which the jury had voted and at the time of the crime an untreated TBI

Mr. Lee is a highly respected and much loved member of our Board and Secretary/Treasurer. Jeffery Lee has a Facebook page “Life For Jeffery Lee” and a website https://www.lifeforjefferylee.com/ where you can learn more about Jaylove, as he is called by his friends and family. The Talking Points and address for the Governor can be found at https://www.phadp.org/execution-alert-10/ .and the petition https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/stop-the-execution-of-jeffery-lee-in-alabama/ We are forwarding actions from his team The Life for Jeffery Lee Campaign, and hope that we can count on you to act on his behalf!

Concerns Mount over Nitrogen Gas Execution Method as Supreme Court Dissents – Davis Vanguard  “Questions surrounding whether executions should be paused because of claims of cruel and unusual punishment may return to the courts next month in the case of Jeffrey Lee. Lee currently has an “ongoing federal lawsuit” challenging the “humaneness of the nitrogen execution method.” And on the same topic SCOTUSblog: Will the Supreme Court end nitrogen gas executions?

We also discussed the article by Austin Sarat A Supreme Court ruling failed to curb racial bias in jury selection.

The Death Penalty Information Center published an article “Reclaiming Life From the Ashes” How Clemency Can Honor Rehabilitation on Death Row. Our beloved Anthony Boyd was featured: “Anthony “Ant” Boyd of Alabama became a leader in the death penalty abolition movement within his prison community. As the director of “Project Hope to Abolish the Death Penalty,” he worked with other incarcerated men to raise awareness about capital punishment and execution methods. An avid writer, Mr. Boyd emphasized forgiveness and reflection. “The world would be a better place if we all started to look for things like forgiveness and understanding in those mirrors we know as our hearts,” he wrote. In the days before his execution on October 23, 2025, fellow incarcerated men honored him with a tribute poem, pledging to continue the work he had begun. “I know what change is, because [I] saw it in you,” they wrote.”

Our thanks and admiration to all who protested the racist redistricting bill! Last Wednesday included a little added tension as protesters, who usually demonstrate outside the building, and many did, came inside the Senate chamber, singing and chanting “We have nothing to lose but our chains.”

We thank all who are working so hard and diligently to stop all killing in Alabama! And as always in closing, we thank all our generous donors who either gave by going to our website and using the “donate” button or who gave directly. Thank you also to all who took the time to read our notes, commented, liked and shared them on Facebook. Stay safe and be kind to each other.
