Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 5.19.21
On Monday the U.S. Supreme Court extinguished any hope that non-unanimous jury verdicts which it had banned last year in cases involving serious crimes could be applied retroactively. The ruling was 6-3 along party lines. This ruling affects thousands of inmates across the country and of course also here in Alabama. Also on Monday we were shocked to learn that the U.S. Supreme Court denied Mark Jenkins a hearing on his well supported Atkins claims. Justice should be blind but surely it should not be ignorant as well!
Time seems to pass really quickly because it seems as though we just published our quarterly newsletter Wings of Hope yesterday and here it is time once more to write articles and prepare for the next edition. This time we thought we would try something different and assign some topics which we thought would be educational for our readers. One thing which we can promise you is that as always a lot of work will go into the newsletter in order to provide you with our very best.
We appreciated receiving a roll of purple ribbon from our dedicated Spiritual Advisor, Don Blocker. For us the wearing of a purple ribbon is a sign of solidarity at the time of an execution. We are also receiving type writer ribbon and other typing tools in time for typing up the newsletter. Thank you, Don for all you do for us and have done for us for so many years!
We have been moved to the Segregation Unit and like all moves it has been stressful for all of us. As always we will do our best but it is likely that our newsletter will be a delayed. We will keep you posted.
In closing and as always, we continue to thank all our generous donors who either gave by going to our website and using the “donate” button or who gave directly. Thank you also to all who took the time to read our notes, commented, liked and shared them on Facebook. You encourage us and make all the difference. Stay safe!
