Plans are already being made for a rally and petition delivery at noon on 5.28.24 at the Alabama State Capitol in Montgomery. So please mark your calendar and sign the petition! New evidence shows that Jamie Mills was wrongfully convicted and shouldn't be executed.  Equal Justice Initiative attorneys have filed motions to halt his execution.Governor Ivey set 7.18.24 as the execution date by lethal injection for Keith Edmund Gavin. Gavin’s attorney had asked the court not to authorize the execution, arguing the state was moving Gavin to the “front of the line” ahead of other inmates who had exhausted their appeals. From TJ Riggs, the AL State Death Penalty Abolition Coordinator for Amnesty International: “We have just finalized and published our Urgent Action for Jamie Mills. Amnesty is encouraging its members worldwide to write letters calling for a halt to the execution.”

The Alabama Supreme Court on Thursday granted the state attorney general’s request for an execution date for Alan Eugene Miller, who survived a 2022 lethal injection attempt.  “Rather than address these failures, the State of Alabama has attempted to maintain secrecy and avoid public scrutiny, in part by misrepresenting what happened in this botched execution,” the lawyers wrote.  His attorneys have asked the federal judge to block the execution from going forward, seeking to bar the use of nitrogen hypoxia as the method of execution claiming it amounts to cruel and unusual punishment, which is barred by the U.S. Constitution.

We discussed Dr. Joel Zivots’ First Opinion podcast “How a new death penalty method undermines physician authority.” .” Not only is this type of death cruel and painful, he argues, but such a bill would “effectively wrest control of physician conduct from medical boards”. Also, Stephen Coopers “Execution volunteerism: Yet another death penalty horror.”

We are honored to have been able to organize a fundraiser for our friends of Death Penalty Action. We could not do what we do without them.
