Governor Ivey set 7.18.24 as the execution date by lethal injection for Keith Edmund Gavin. Gavin’s attorney had asked the court not to authorize the execution, arguing the state was moving Gavin to the “front of the line” ahead of other inmates who had exhausted their appeals. Governor Ivey set 9.26.24 as the execution date for Alan Eugene Miller, who survived a 2022 lethal injection attempt. On Friday Miller’s attorneys asked a federal judge for a preliminary injunction to stop the execution from going forward, or to at least require the state change the protocol. Alabama uses an industrial-type gas mask to force an inmate to breathe pure nitrogen, depriving him or her of the oxygen needed to maintain bodily functions.  The attorney general’s office asked the Alabama Supreme Court to authorize an execution date for Carey Dale Grayson using nitrogen hypoxia. “It is disappointing that the State wants to schedule a third nitrogen hypoxia execution before the question of whether the first one tortured Kenneth Smith has been resolved,” John Palombi, an attorney with the Federal Defenders Program wrote in an email.

At last week’s Board Meeting besides our usual protocol we also had orientation for the most recent man to come to death row. Once someone arrives he is put on single walk but even then we manage to stop by his cell to offer assistance but then when single walk is done we invite the man to our Board meeting. We are there to help, to offer insights, to offer friendship, to give back! Important for all of us!

The pop-up art exhibit at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Birmingham will now only be up for July 21 and will be attached to a church service on the topic!

We are very happy to report “Big WIN for anti- #DeathPenalty activism! "We have been inundated with attacks by telephone, letter, email, and social media."Company Linked to Federal Execution Spree Says It Will No Longer Produce Key Drug” Our friends Death Penalty Action & Worth Rises partnered to demand a halt to providing drugs for executions....And one of the authors of the article is our good friend Lauren Gill as well as Daniel Moritz-Rabson.

We thank all who are working so hard and diligently to stop all killing in Alabama! And as always in closing, we thank all our generous donors who either gave by going to our website and using the “donate” button or who gave directly. Thank you also to all who took the time to read our notes, commented, liked and shared them on Facebook. Stay safe and be kind to each other!
