An Alabama legislator wants to expand the number of circumstances that can allow the death penalty to be imposed and has pre filed a bill. ” Carla Crowder, executive director of Alabama Appleseed, a criminal justice reform group, said in a statement that evidence showed that “certainty of arrest and conviction is the greatest deterrent to crime, not length of sentence or level of punishment.” Some civil rights groups have said that capital punishment does not deter crime. Crowder said investments in mental health care and violence prevention would work to cut crime in the state.” Unfortunately Alabama would rather kill!
We heard from our Advisory Board Member Sarah Gregory who “will be speaking on a panel conversation at The Atlantic Festival this September in NYC. It is truly meaningful to be part of such a thoughtful dialogue, and I look forward to joining Elizabeth Bruenig in conversation to reflect on the human impact of the criminal justice system, especially the death penalty.”
Many of us appreciated being able to attend Kairos Prison Ministry last weekend. We thank this organization and its members who “Through the work of over 30,000 volunteers, Kairos Prison Ministry brings the light, love and friendship of Jesus Christ into the lives of prisoners and their families. They learn they are forgiven, and they learn they are loved. It is truly a life changing, and often life saving experience.”
We thank all who are working so hard and diligently to stop all killing in Alabama! And as always in closing, we thank all our generous donors who either gave by going to our website and using the “donate” button or who gave directly. Thank you also to all who took the time to read our notes, commented, liked and shared them on Facebook. Stay safe and be kind to each other!
Esther
