Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 8.24.22

The Alabama Supreme Court set September 22nd as the execution date for Alan Eugene Miller, a severely mentally disturbed man. Talking Points are posted on our website http://www.phadp.org/?q=alerts. Please do all you can just as we on the Row are also doing to be present to Alan.

For those who have been with us for a while you are aware that we are a group member of Alabama Arise. You are also aware that each year Arise members vote on next year’s priorities at their annual meeting which this year is on September 24th. Each member group can designate up to six representatives to receive 7 votes each to vote on the group’s issue, for us the death penalty moratorium/criminal justice. If you are able to be one of our representatives, and the voting is on line, please contact me by September 12th so your names can be submitted to Arise.

Our newsletter Wings of Hope is in the process of being formatted which should mean that before all too long it will be on its way to the printer.

And yes, you will have noticed that worldwide reaction to Joe James’ horrific botched execution is still ongoing. That is so important and so we were very grateful to Josh Moon for his Opinion Piece “Alabama apparently tortured a man, No one seems to care.” And we like his question: “"And if all of that is so, they know that there is only one question left: Who are we — as the people of the State of Alabama — to stand in judgment of anyone if we’re willing to sit quietly by and condone the unimaginable torture of another human?"

Notable is also the article published in Criminal Law “Cover-Up, Double-Talk, and Trial and Error Mark Lethal Injection’s Current Crisis”. It states “The cover-up, double-talk, and trial-and-error approach that mark lethal injection’s recent history mean that problems of the kind that occurred in the James execution will keep happening. Unless we stop using lethal injection, its most serious and recurring defects will not be fixed, and the suffering of those subject to this supposedly most humane execution method will not be alleviated.”

In closing and as always, we continue to thank all our generous donors who either gave by going to our website and using the “donate” button or who gave directly. Thank you also to all who took the time to read our notes, commented, liked and shared them on Facebook. You encourage us and make all the difference. Stay safe!
