Kim Chandler writing for AP: “Grayson has an ongoing lawsuit seeking to block the state from using the same protocol that was used to execute Smith. His attorneys argued the method causes unconstitutional levels of pain and that Smith showed signs of “conscious suffocation.” The court filing cited witness descriptions of the execution and the findings of an autopsy conducted on Smith. Grayson’s legal team hired an expert to review Smith’s autopsy and found it “highly concerning”.
The Attorney General has asked the Alabama Supreme Court to authorize setting an execution date for Derrick Dearman who fired his attorney and gave up his appeals.
Alabama Arise will have it’s annual meeting where the priorities are chosen for 2025 on Saturday, September 28, 2024. We thank our supporters who accepted the invitation from us as “designated voters”.
From our partners Death Penalty Action we forwarded: Exploring Alabama - Next Gas Execution! We hope you can help. As you can see Alabama is certainly not going backward when it comes to the death penalty!
Although we are aware that ending capital punishment was removed by the DNC from its official platform we also know that this does not mean a change in policy rather what issues are prudent to emphasize at this time and that says a lot about our country! Shane Claiborne’s article The Democrats need to be done with death while not without hope points out that “ It is noteworthy that the states that continue to execute are former Confederate states, a reminder that the death penalty is part of our shameful history of racial terror, lynching and slavery. The places lynchings were happening most frequently 100 years ago are those where executions happen the most frequently today. The states that held onto slavery the longest are the same ones that continue to hold onto the death penalty.”
We thank all who are working so hard and diligently to stop all killing in Alabama! And as always in closing, we thank all our generous donors who either gave by going to our website and using the “donate” button or who gave directly. Thank you also to all who took the time to read our notes, commented, liked and shared them on Facebook. Stay safe and be kind to each other!
