Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 8.30.23
The very bad, shocking and outrageous news is that the Alabama attorney general’s office on Friday asked the state Supreme Court to set an execution date for death row inmate Kenneth Eugene Smith, 58. The court filing indicated Alabama plans to put him to death by nitrogen hypoxia, an execution method that is authorized in three states but has never been used. Yesterday the men were handed the redacted protocol even when they refused to sign before having consulted with their attorney. And the developmentally delayed or mentally ill how much did they understand about all of this?
The State has also asked for an execution date for Casey McWhorter. We are reaching out to Casey and he is very appreciative. We will keep you posted.
As an organization we believe in development and so our Chair and Vice Chair decided that instead of them always taking the leading role in running the meeting, the Board members should take turns doing this. It is working out well and the men enjoy the challenge. Wednesday is also the day when Esther gets the chance to talk to the members.
Last Thursday we heard from Sarah Gregory who had completed her one hour long podcast which can’t have been easy for her, but then Sarah does not give up! As happens four times a year we are working on the next edition of our newsletter Wings of Hope. We are getting close to putting it into the mail so it can be taken to the printer.
We thank all who are working so hard and diligently to stop all killing in Alabama! And as always in closing, we thank all our generous donors who either gave by going to our website and using the “donate” button or who gave directly. Thank you also to all who took the time to read our notes, commented, liked and shared them on Facebook. And if you would like to order our book “Ghosts Over the Boiler” you can do so at Amazon.com.
