Governor Ivey set 10,17.24  as the execution date by lethal injection for Derrick Dearman who gave up his appeals. Talking Points: https://www.phadp.org/execution-alert-derrick-dearman-10-17-24/.  According to the Death Penalty Information Center, Alabama last executed six people in 2011 and now will do so again this year. It also executed six people in 2009. Both were the most for the state since executions resumed in 1983.

We went over the upcoming executions around the country discussing the particular issues in each and also planning vigils.

From our partners Death Penalty Action we forwarded:  Exploring Alabama - Next Gas Execution! We hope you can help. As you can see Alabama is certainly not going backward when it comes to the death penalty!

Last week, as we do every two weeks, we had a very productive Alabama People of Faith Death Penalty Coalition gathering sponsored by EJUSA. If you are interested in joining please let us know.

We read the New York Times Opinion piece: “America Does not need the Death Penalty” with the closing lines: “Mr. Biden was right to identify capital punishment as a moral affront, and he should help relegate this practice to history.” We also read the article by Austin Sarat “the end of the abolition era: Democrats quietly drop their opposition to the death penalty” which traces the history of that opposition but as with everything, talk is great but it is action that we need.

We thank all who are working so hard and diligently to stop all killing in Alabama! And as always in closing, we thank all our generous donors who either gave by going to our website and using the “donate” button or who gave directly. Thank you also to all who took the time to read our notes, commented, liked and shared them on Facebook. Stay safe and be kind to each other!
