Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 9.13.17

Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 9.13.17

Lawyers last Wednesday asked the Alabama Supreme Court to stop the executions since the 11th Circuit Court ordered hearings in a separate lawsuit challenging the humaneness of the state’s lethal injection procedure. They argued the execution should not go forward while there's a pending trial on the "constitutionality of the method of execution that the state intends to use."

This was great news with which to begin the stormy weekend nevertheless now is not the time to think we are home free. The Talking Points for both scheduled executions are up on Facebook as well as on our website at http://www.phadp.org/?q=alerts

We featured a new book on our Facebook page which challenges Christians to examine their stand on the death penalty. The author was raised to believe the death penalty was invented by God…. but as a young person, he had more questions than answers about a God of LOVE, who could also be about murder.  So, his own story is one of a radical shift in thinking, and he hopes this book will help others who believe their faith condones death to re-consider their convictions. The Execution of God Encountering the Death Penalty by Jeff Hood can be ordered and free shipping on the book is available when using the promo code ABOLISH at www.chalicepress.com or 1-800-366-3383.

The latest edition of our newsletter Wings of Hope is ready to be mailed. The online edition should also be up shortly. The phone problems at Holman continue  and are making for a lot of difficulties. We are doing our best to get thank yous out in a timely manner.

Esther participated in the SOS weekly calls where she was given the opportunity to raise the above issues with leaders of other Alabama organizations which for years have been supportive of our issues. We appreciate and thank them! And of course this Saturday is the important ARISE ANNUAL MEETING. Will we see you there?

 See you next week!
