Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 12.9.20

Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison 12.9.20

At this time when the airwaves appear to be filled with negative news it felt good for us to focus on some of the great supporters/friends we have in our lives. Fortunately there are too many of these to list all but there are three we did focus on today. We received word last week of the death of our longtime friend and supporter Gregory Speltz 1923-2020. You can read his amazing bio on our Facebook page, and perhaps to state simply who Greg was is to say that even during his last years while sitting in a wheelchair in a nursing home he continued to be an active friend to us as an organization as well as to individuals on death row at Holman. We will not forget!

We focused next on a friend in France, Jlouis who at one time was a friend to a man at Holman who then was executed. Jlouis is with ACAT France an organization which is present to us in prayer at the time of an execution but that is not all! The minute we got the word out about the upcoming execution in February Jlouis started to write Governor Ivey. Talk about feeling heard!

And finally closer to home and very dear to our hearts is Murder Victim’s mother and Advisory Board Member Callie Greer. When we need something she is there, no questions asked! Thank you, Callie! ·

Our warmest congratulations to Senator Hank Sanders, Faya Rose Toure and Martha Morgan who were “honored for their work with NCLEJ in Montgomery, Alabama, fighting criminalization of poverty, and for  their long standing commitment to civil rights issues.”

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit has ruled that prisoners may not file method-of-execution challenges under the federal civil rights statute when their proposed alternative method of execution is unavailable and would nullify their death sentence
The decision came in the case of #Alabama death-row prisoner #MichaelNance.

As you know, the Alabama Supreme Court set 2.11.21 as the execution date for Willie B. Smith III a developmentally delayed man. The Talking Points are up on our website and on our Facebook page. http://www.phadp.org/?q=alerts. Please contact Governor Ivey!

And yes, our cell numbers will change when we are moved but the ones given on our Christmas card list even if we were to move before Christmas would still reach us: http://www.phadp.org/?q=node/858. Thank you for thinking of us even during these difficult times!

In closing and as always, we continue to thank all our generous donors who either gave by going to our website and using the “donate” button or who gave directly. Thank you also to all who took the time to read our notes, commented, liked and shared them on Facebook. You encourage us and make all the difference. Please stay safe!
