Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison

The Board read the lengthy article in the Mobile Press-Register on how the system failed William Ziegler. Members were impressed  by the article's length and position on the front page and, as one of the Board said, "maybe it will be a beginning of change in Alabama." Another step!

Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison

We discussed some of the positive developments of the last year, and the most recent one in the Esaw Jackson case. There are other men on Alabama's death row who also have the mental retardation issue, and we hope that they too will have their death sentence commuted. The State fights this and all other issues tooth and nail, as can be seen by... the comment made by the prosecutor that he believed that Esaw Jackson was faking his diagnosis of a 56 I.Q., a diagnosis which had been established by a State doctor.

Today was the Christmas party for the Board and a good time was had by all! Thank you to our friends in Stuttgart! It was good to hear their upbeat voices, even though the packages ordered by family/friends will not arrive until next week earliest, the weather is certainly not at its best and of course all miss loved ones and some were unable ...to call home.

Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison

We discussed the Year End DPIC Death Penalty Report and Alabama's standing vis a vis other states. We are realistically hopeful that abolition in other states will in the end help to bring about abolition in Alabama.

It was time to sing Happy Birthday to Nicholas whose birthday is actually on Christmas Day. A special day for a special man!

Some of the topics up for discussion were the resentencing of Bobby Tarver, the grant received from RESIST and the many reactions received from supporters to both these pieces of news and to our newsletter. It is good for all of us to know that there is a great, big world out there which hears us.

Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison

Today seemed to be a day where there was nothing but positive news to share. It ranged from donations received from generous friends, some of them from overseas, to the arrival of the hard copy of our newsletter at Holman.

We were humbled, yet at the same time encouraged by a repeat gift from Lifespark in Switzerland in support of the work we do. We do very little money raising per se, and so appreciate the support of our friends all the more. Thank you to all!

Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison

We are gearing up for the end of the year and our trusted Sec./Treasurer has completed the year end tax deductible donation letters, which will go out to our donors tomorrow.

We had a ...guest at the meeting who recently arrived on death row at Holman. The men give newcomers insights they have found to be helpful along the way. As one of the Board members said to me, it is all about balance, and of course that also holds true for those of us on the street.

Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison

As this was the first Board meeting since the election, the outcome of the vote to abolish the death penalty in CA was of course discussed. It goes without saying that we had hoped that abolition votes would win, still we were encouraged that the loss was not overwhelming. We know that our friends in CA will persevere.
